How can you start Anger Management?

When it comes to anger management, it is important to understand the root cause of your anger. This can be anything from a traumatic experience, to a stressful situation, to a feeling of being overwhelmed. Once you have identified the source of your anger, it is important to take steps to address it. This could include talking to a therapist, engaging in relaxation techniques, or finding a healthy outlet for your emotions.

What are we looking to achieve in anger management counselling?

On our team, anger management counselling is often treated through talk therapy and counselling. A social worker, therapist, or counsellor can help you recognize anger before it gets out of control and identify technqiues and approaches to de-escalate your emotions.

Counsellors are well-equipped to teach acceptance of angry feelings and expression, not trying to get rid of these feelings, but create more mindfulness and control around processing these emotions.

Anger management counselling requires a multi-modality approach.

Our counsellors recognize everyone is different. So we use a combination of therapy approaches suited to controlling unwanted angry behaviour:

  • Cognitive behavioural Therapy (CBT) - focuses on helping individuals identify and challenge angry thoughts and behaviours, and develop healthier ways of recognizing feelings in the moment.

  • Pyschodynamic Therapy - focuses on the psychological roots of anger. Through working with a therapist or social worker, we can identify ways to alleviate symptoms.

  • EMDR or other mindfulness-based approaches - focuses on “unsticking” your brain in negative thought patterns. Through EMDR, the aim is to replace negative thought patterns and beliefs with positive alternatives.
