Individual Counselling and Therapy

When you want so badly to let go, but can’t seem to.

Trauma counselling is a type of therapy that helps people who have experienced a traumatic event or series of events.

This counselling is designed to help people process their emotions, understand their reactions, and develop coping strategies to manage their distress.

Who can benefit from trauma counselling?

Trauma counselling can be beneficial for people who have experienced a traumatic event, such as a natural disaster, a violent crime, a serious accident, or a life-threatening illness.

It can also be beneficial for people who have experienced long-term trauma, such as childhood abuse or neglect, domestic violence, or military combat.

There is no one-size-fits all solution for trauma. As each instance of trauma is different, the approach to healing and support must be individualized to a person’s particular experience.

What are we looking to achieve in trauma counselling?

On our team, trauma counselling is conducted by a social worker or psychotherapist. The therapist will work with the client to identify the traumatic event or events, explore the client’s reactions to the event, and develop strategies to manage the distress.

The therapist may also help the client to identify and address any underlying issues that may be contributing to the distress.

The goal of trauma counselling is to help the client to process their emotions, understand their reactions, and develop coping strategies to manage their distress

Trauma counselling requires a multi-modality approach.

Our counsellors recognize everyone is different. So we use a combination of therapy approaches suited to the trauma you’re experiencing:

  • Cognitive behavioural Therapy (CBT) - focuses on helping individuals identify and challenge anxious thoughts and behaviours, and develop healthier ways of recognizing feelings in the moment.

  • Pyschodynamic Therapy - focuses on the psychological roots of emotional suffering. Through working with a therapist or social worker, we can identify ways to alieviate symptoms and suffering.

  • EMDR or other mindfulness-based approaches - focuses on “unsticking” your brain in negative thought patterns. Through EMDR, the aim is to replace negative thought patterns and beliefs with positive alternatives.

  • And more
